Breguet Watches: A History of Innovation

Switzerland is most prominently known for two things – chocolates and watches. Swiss fine-watch maker, Swatch Group acquired Breguet. Breguet has come a long way in the art of making timeless watches, Kind of ironic isn’t it. This brand was established in 1775 and it is most popular among watch enthusiasts & collectors. Abraham-Louis Breguet, the founder of Breguet watches had first opened his workshop in Paris, France. The watches were introduced to the French courts and the royal aristocrats were one of his first clients. The 1780’s saw a time of self-winding watches. Breguet used the term “Perpétuelle” to describe his watches that were the ‘watches of kings’ with par excellent designs and elegance. Perpétuelle became and remains a genius of its time. Queen Marie-Antoinette of France was an ardent support of the Breguet watches and had many watches to her name. She even recommended them to everyone in her kingdom. Gaining such prominence, there was no stopping or looking back for Breguet. The history of Breguet watches tells us there were innovations in watches one after another. The innovative genius that Breguet was, led to new terms enter the vocabulary of watch making. ‘Breguet hands’, ‘Breguet overcoil’, were some of the names commonly used to speak of the products used to create watches. Breguet went on to create the Parachute which was a shock proof mechanism for watches. In the 1790s this was no less than magic. The magnetic pivot was patented as recently as the year 2010, improved the precision and made Breguet’s master pieces more reliable. The year 1810 saw the greatest innovation for mankind which is still in use today - the wristwatch. The client was the Queen of Naples to first own a wristwatch. The first ever known to mankind.
